If I Invested in Crypto Calculator

Pick a coin, an amount, and a past date to see how much your investment would be worth today — with profit, ROI, and growth multiple based on real historical prices.

Your investment

Uses the daily closing price (UTC). Bitcoin data is available from August 17, 2017.

Value today

What the result means

“Value today” is how much your past USD investment would be worth if you had bought the coin on the purchase date and still held it — using that day’s closing price and today’s market price. Profit/loss and ROI ignore trading fees, taxes, and any sales along the way. It answers a what-if holding scenario, not your actual portfolio unless you never traded after buying.

Formulas we use

Coins bought = amount invested (USD) ÷ historical price on purchase date (UTC daily close). Value today = coins bought × current price. Profit = value today − amount invested. ROI % = (profit ÷ amount invested) × 100. Growth multiple = value today ÷ amount invested (e.g. 3× means your money tripled).

Worked examples

  1. $1,000 in Bitcoin years ago

    Suppose you invested $1,000 on 1 Jan 2020 when BTC closed at $7,200, and today’s price is $94,000.

    Coins = 1,000 ÷ 7,200 ≈ 0.1389 BTC. Value today = 0.1389 × 94,000 ≈ $13,056. Profit ≈ $12,056.

    ROI about +1,206% — roughly a 13× growth multiple (illustrative prices; the tool uses live API data).

  2. $500 in Ethereum

    Invest $500 on a day ETH closed at $1,500; current price $3,400.

    Coins = 500 ÷ 1,500 ≈ 0.333 ETH. Value today = 0.333 × 3,400 ≈ $1,133.

    Profit about $633 — ROI +127%, about 2.27× your money.

  3. When the market is down since purchase

    Invest $2,000 when the coin closed at $80; current price $55.

    Coins = 25. Value today = 25 × 55 = $1,375. Profit = −$625.

    ROI −31.25% — the calculator shows losses the same way when current price is below your entry.

Frequently asked questions

What if I invested $100 in Bitcoin?
Enter $100 as the amount, choose Bitcoin, and pick your purchase date. We divide $100 by that day’s BTC price to see how many coins you would have bought, then multiply by today’s price for current value.
How do you calculate “if I invested in crypto”?
We fetch the coin’s USD closing price on your chosen date (UTC) and its current market price, then apply the buy-and-hold math above. No DCA or partial sells — one lump-sum buy.
Which price is used for the purchase date?
The daily closing price for that calendar day in UTC from our price data source — the same convention many charts use for “price on date X.” Intraday entries may differ slightly from what you paid on an exchange.
Does this include fees or taxes?
No. Exchange fees would reduce coins bought; capital gains tax would apply when you sell. Use our crypto profit and tax calculators for trade-level P&L and rough tax estimates.
How far back can I go?
Each coin has a “data since” date in the picker — typically when reliable daily history begins (often years of data for major coins). Dates before that or in the future are rejected.
Is past performance guaranteed in the future?
No. This tool shows historical what-if returns only. Crypto is volatile; future prices can rise or fall. Not financial advice.
